Making Dorm "Storage" Usable

Posted by Jamie Klinger-Krebs on Aug 28, 2014 3:34:00 PM

dorm stoolOne of the biggest challenges I hear from college students moving into dorms is the lack of storage space. We know how small dorm rooms are, so choosing furniture and accessories that can serve more than one purpose is important.

dorm storageFor example, this combo footstool/storage box/table is perfect for a dorm or apartment.

The original “box” was in great condition. The top was stained and the bottom has paint splatters. And, the handles were a little boring.

dorm storageSince I wanted to redo the box for a guy’s room, I choose a men’s XL flannel shirt in a gray, black and white plaid. I cut the back to fit the seat and stapled it in place. I repainted the box in a dark charcoal to match the shirt.

dorm storageI wanted to decorate the box without being feminine or girly. So, a trip to the hardware store uncovered a length of chain and bungee cord.

dorm storageI cut a piece of chain and screwed it into the existing holes with screws and nuts.

Then I simply wrapped the bungee cord around the bottom three times. It’s decorative and masculine!

Not only does some lucky guy get storage and an additional seat, if he puts a tray on top, it becomes a table.

If you want to make it easier to move, add wheels!
